Anthropologist, teacher, academic administrator, writer, and poet, his contributions to the study of man and to the history of scientific thought are notable not only for their depth of insight but also for their literary grace.

His perception that the study of the nature of man through the natural sciences is a humane enterprise has done much to bring mutual understanding and respect within the community of the humanities and sciences.
